Phoenix Ridings is starting her third month of REEP on property and has excitedly suggested the book “The Secret Life of Plants” for this month’s staff pick.
She’s an herbalist, visual artist, and most currently, — a grateful member of the CABinS team. This book found her in the midst of a personal revelation on ethnobotany (the relationship between people and plants) and further inspired communion and admiration for our leafy friends. Plants are much more conscious than our current society gives them credit for, and perhaps may be the wisest of teachers’ humanity has - if only we learn to listen. The authors of this novel tactfully bridge logistical science and seeming “magic” in a way even your most anti-hippie friends will respect.
As the days get colder, the plants that surround us can teach us much about turning inward and settling into an intuitive winter. This November, Phoenix highly suggests grabbing this book, steeping some tea, and talking it over with your favorite house plant.
